NEWTOWN, PA
The Bucks County borough of Newtown was founded by William Penn himself in 1684. This area straddles the Newtown Creek, which empties into the Delaware River. Newtown served as county seat until the courthouse was moved to Doylestown. Newtown has been well-known as the residence of the author, James Michener, and it was also the location where the movie “Signs” was made in 2002. The National Register of Historic Places shows the Newtown Historic District, which was enlarged twice since being formed in 1969. Newtown is quite the educational hub. Located here are Temple University, Holy Family College, LaSalle University, the Bucks County Community College, and several Libraries. The Joint Downtown Newtown Corporation has done much to highlight the historical significance of the area. The architecture of any new construction in the historic districts must complement buildings still standing from long ago. Pick up a few brochures, and then relax in your room at your bed and breakfast inn, while you decide what to visit tomorrow. Here’s a thought: each Friday, Newtown celebrates the arts with paint exhibits and various performances. Don’t miss out! |
